Duties Summary What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Learn more about this agency Responsibilities As a Biologist / Fish Biologist within the Ecosystems Fisheries Program, some of your specific duties will include:
Serves as technical staff expert on fisheries and aquatic species research in the USGS Ecosystems Mission Area.
Leads USGS fisheries and aquatic species research activities across Ecosystems Mission Area in collaboration with the Department and other agencies and organizations.
Develops and evaluates national science program strategies and activities in collaboration with other agencies and organizations to address fisheries and aquatic species research issues.
Prepares materials and communications to explain, support, advocate, and defend fisheries and aquatic species research in the USGS, The Department, the Office of Management and Budget, other agencies and organizations, and before Congressional staff and committees.
Manages and tracks the fisheries and aquatic species research budget, develops budget justifications and initiatives, establishes funding priorities, and ensures consistency with Ecosystem Mission Area goals.
Travel Required Occasional travel - Overnight travel of an average of up to 5 nights per month may be required.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT :
Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.
A.
Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR B.
Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years.
The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in A above.
In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.
FOR GS-14 examples include:
1) planning and leading biology projects of substantial depth and/or breadth; 2) analyzing and interpreting biological related project data with novel and obscure problems and publishing or preparing results of findings; 3) developing new or significantly modified biological techniques, methods, or criteria; 4) providing advisory, planning, or reviewing services as a technical specialist on a biological issue.
For examples 1-4, the work provided wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
FISH BIOLOGIST - GS-0482-14:
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT :
Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic requirement for Fishery Biologist, all grade levels.
A.
Degree:
major in biological science that included:
at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; and at least 12 semester hours or the equivalent in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields.
(Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate).
OR B.
Combination of education and experience-courses equivalent to a major in biological science (ie at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours or the equivalent were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours or the equivalent were in the animal sciences, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years.
The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope, and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in A above.
In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.
FOR GS-14 examples include:
1) Providing technical leadership, staff level coordination or consultation for a major fishery program; resolving problems that are resistant to established practices; 2) Serving as an expert agency consultant with international, national, and State officials; 3) Conducting field investigations based on newly identified fishery program areas; planning/executing assignments, selecting appropriate techniques, determining project scope/approach.
